Calling Governments to Invest in Care Work for a Better Future for all, for Gender Equality and Justice
ActionAid Palestine(AAP) joined other offices of ActionAid organization in many parts of the world and global unions of labors to commemorate the 12th annual world day for decent work. APP launched social media campaign on facebook and twitter calling governments to invest in care work for a better future for all, for gender equality and justice since care workers deserve decent work.
The campaign demanded governments to recognize care work of women and enhance their living wages, equal pay for work of equal value and safe and heathy working environments that are free from discrimination, violence and harassment.
Many Hashtags were used in this campaign as #InvestInCare,#WDDW19 #AllWomenWork reflecting the fact that care work is systematically undervalued and underpaid. They also show that Care workers – the majority of whom are women- too often experience discrimination, job insecurity, including zero-hours contracts, low pay, poor working conditions and violence and harassment at work.
All around the world, women are overworked, underpaid, unheard and under-represented. Too often women's work goes unnoticed, unrecognised and unpaid. Billions of hours are being spent on unpaid care work each day - with women bearing the greatest burden.
Young women pay the price for the lack of government support in reducing unpaid care work during their peak reproductive years, women aged 25-34 carry the most unequal burden of unpaid care work, and are 22% more likely to live in extreme poverty than men of the same age according to a recent reports.
The International Labour Organization has stated that current deficits in the quality and provision of care services will create a severe and unsustainable global care crisis and increase gender inequalities at work, if not adequately addressed.
