ActionAid Palestine to Celebrate International Youth Day 2021
ActionAid Palestine (AAP) organized different activities to celebrate International Youth Day (IYD) which falls on 12th of August every year. The theme of this year is “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health”. It highlights the role of youth in saving environment and maintaining the biodiversity and mitigating the impact of climate change on their communities.
AAP organized different activities on this occasion in line with its theme for this year. Those activities include field visit to agricultural cooperatives supported by AAP’s program of “Civil and Democratic Participation of Palestinian Youth”(CIV) .Youth visited cooperatives of “ Ikhilia” and “Karam Al-Teen” in Tulkarem and Jordan Valleys which maintain the Palestinian cultural heritage .These visits aim to raise awareness of youth about models of Palestinian agricultural environmental work and their importance of agricultural cooperatives in protecting and strengthening belongining to the land ,supporting economic empowerment of Palestinian households, and enhancing food crops that improve the food security for Palestinian community and overcoming unemployment .
AAP will also launch social media campaigns to convey messages of youth on this occasion. They will stress importance of raising their awareness about health food systems and change of consumption behavior and implementation of environmental initiatives.
During past months, CIV supported a number of environmental initiatives for maintain the Palestinian environment. They include initiatives for maintaining environment in the town of Su’eer, Haska Al-Safa environmental walk and planting olive trees on the occasion of Land Day in Hebron Governorate in the south of West Bank.
The percentage of youth (18-29 years) in Palestine was about 22% (1.16 million) of the total population in mid - 2021 (22.3% in the West Bank and 21.8% in Gaza Strip).
unemployment rates constitute the biggest challenge for the youth, as these rates reached 64% among females and 33% among males, and were the highest in Gaza Strip compared to the West Bank (67% and 24% respectively). Perhaps the highest rates of unemployment among the youth aged 18-29 years were recorded among graduates, including those holding an intermediate diploma or higher (54%) with a clear difference between youth males and females, 39% and 69% respectively.
