ActionAid Palestine to Launch a Multi-Channel Awareness Raising Campaign

Challenging Discriminatory Attitudes and Practices relating to Young Women’s Economic Empowerment

Hebron -West Bank-ActionAid Palestine(AAP) launched a multi-channel awareness raising campaign titled with “Challenge Discriminatory Attitudes and Practices relating to Young Women’s Economic Empowerment” through a number of media and community activities. This campaign is a part of “Social Innovation” project implemented by AAP and funded by Italian Agency for Development Cooperation in partnership with local and Italian partners. It aims to combat unemployment among youth, build their professional capacities needed for labor market and promote their economic resilience of their communities as marginalized communities in eight neighborhoods in governorates of Bethlehem and Hebron in the south of the West Bank.  

The activities of the campaign include a number of aired TV and radio episodes hosting a group of decision-makers and experts to increase awareness of audience in general and young women in particular about forms of discrimination against them in labor market. It will also introduce them to the most important valid labor laws and discuss difficult and unsuitable work conditions they pass through including low salaries and kind of job opportunities available for women. Furthermore, the cultural and social factors impeding women’s participation in labor market will be addressed. Inspiring and successful examples of women who faced challenges in the field of work and entrepreneurship will be presented to inspire other young women to initiate their start-ups. Educational brochures will be distributed and community meetings will be conducted with targeted communities and private sector in the project   to brief them about the campaign and its importance and outcomes.

3200 young people aged (18-29 years old) benefited from activities of the project during the past two years and 63% of the young are women. They were engaged in a series of training and counselling activities generally seeking to create a suitable environment for economic empowerment that women can utilize and contribute to achieve Goals of Sustainable Development related to end poverty, gender equality, decent work and economic growth.

 The Country Director of AAP, Ibrahim Ibragaith said: “we seek through this kind of project and campaign to create success stories and role models for other young boys and young women.
